Like a Box of New Sharp Crayons

When a friend asked me about some books I'd put on my "Mama's Wish List" for Christmas,
I was happy to share the inspiring titles with her.
(If you're interested, see below).

I then realized, I'm feeling rather optimistic regarding upcoming 2013,
even though I've had unexpected surprises this past month.
(Hitting the "pause" button on my schooling being the main surpise.)

I realized I love the turn of a new year....
like a box of new crayons, or a new calendar/day planner/organizer, or a new home to settle into,
everything has a newness, a freshness about it.
It's clean and unspoilt.

It's a personality/character trait God hardwired into me,
and I think it is wonderful and I so appreciate it.  I wish everyone had it.  :)
It's like a warm cup of cocoa in your hands, or a healing spring day, or walk in the woods.

As December keeps rapidly slipping past us, day by day...
are you feeling inspired or wary of the new year?

Remember to Rest...

I was just reflecting this morning, on how many times in the book of Matthew alone,
Jesus took time to pull away, step aside & reconnect with the Father.
He took a 40 day time out in the desert,
sat by the lake,
crossed to the other side,
away from everyone,
went up on the hillside,
and drew new to God in prayer.

It is such a vivid reminder to me that we need rest too.

And when He was worn out, and people were still clamoring around Him
(just like a weary mom with kids!)
and He could not get "away",
He still had compassion on them, and sought the Father's provision,
feeding the 5,000.

Remember, everything, and I do mean EVERY thing is at God's disposal.
The laws of nature, cell replication, multiplication, creation itself!
He can help you, providing exactly what you need.
Draw near to Him.

It Seemed So FINAL...

I don't have a picture for today...yet...but I have something to share.

This morning I was reading about the day that Jesus died, and when they buried Him.
It seemed so final.
It struck me how utterly HOPELESS His followers and family and friends must have felt.
Their precious Jesus had just died a horribly shocking & gruesome death.
They were laying Him in a tomb now!
He should have been on a THRONE!
They were sealing the tomb shut with a huge stone.
As the stone settled into it's final place, scraping along the stone wall, and finally stopping,
it was all over.

At least that's what they thought.

They really had NO idea what God was up to,
what glorifying redemptive act He was in the middle of!
If they had any rememberance of Jesus saying He would raise up on the 3rd day,
it was probably a foggy recollection, a dim memory,
or a doubt-laden, confusion-wrapped, huge quandary they were wrestling with.
After all He was dead, how could He raise Himself?
At least that's what they thought.

But He would rise.  Victorious!  (I'm still waiting to read that part!)

I want to remind you,
when life, or circumstances, or a specific situation looks at it's worst,
and it's as if all hope has been drained out,
God may have something utterly amazing waiting around the corner.
He is THAT kind of Creator GOD.

It is NOT as final as it seems.

Do What Makes You Come Alive

I was reading Rooms by James Rubart the other day, and ran across a very intriguing statement. In the story, one of the main characters commented about how odd it is that we define ourselves by what we “do” to make a living, instead of what makes us “come alive”. (Rubart, 2010, p. 42). A major component of managing stress is remembering to do what makes us come alive.

Five years ago I learned the importance of doing what makes me come alive. For me that included:
1) accepting that naps are OK,
2) once I had more energy I began exploring watercolor painting,
3) that made me so alive I began learning to play acoustic guitar, and
4) then I got up the nerve BIG TIME, and applied to go back to college to pursue a masters of arts in counseling (a 20 year dream of mine!).
Makes me kind of wonder…what will come next in my life!

Too many times in life we don’t take ourselves seriously. We put our ideas and dreams down, listening to the lie “You can never do that!” Often we believe the lie for so long, that finally, we put our ideas off for good. Or...are your dreams still alive? Have they just gone dormant, shriveled up in some dark corner of your soul? If you think there’s a spark of hope left…

• Take yourself seriously!
Don’t put yourself or your ideas or dreams down anymore!
Don’t put your ideas or dreams off any longer!
• Just try it! Better to have tried and failed, than never to have tried! What if…by some crazy chance…you succeed? “It’s better to have tried and failed than to live life wondering what would’ve happened if I had tried” – Alfred Lord Tennyson.
• Build yourself a support team, cheerleaders, a crew pit, whatever you want to call it. Surround yourself with people who believe in you, encourage you, inspire you, challenge you, and celebrate with you.
• Enjoy the sensations that come with doing what makes you come alive. Celebrate and enjoy even the little things, with all your senses, things like:
1) the warmth of the sun on your skin (touch),
2) a morning bird’s song (sound),
3) a breath of fresh air (smell),
4) that amazing moment the sun comes up (or goes down) (sight), and
5) a morning cup of coffee (or whatever is your “cup of tea”) (taste).
Your senses are there for a reason. Use them. Enjoy them.

When you do what makes you come ALIVE, four things happen:
1) You Get Focused: You get to focus intentionally, continually, on something that is interesting, pleasant, peaceful or beautiful to you.
2) You Get Enjoyment: The most difficult thing at the moment will be learning to capture or create something new, different, or challenging. Or you can simply enjoy practicing what you already know.
3) You Get Lost: Enjoy it so much that you get “lost” in time. You should lose all sense of time so that you are totally distracted from the stresses of life. All stress should fade into the background, until “poof!” it disappears (at least temporarily).
4) You Get Recharged: If by chance you “fail” at capturing or creating, that is OK, because you have already succeeded at four other things:
     a) relaxing (reducing negative stress),
     b) recharging (adding positive back into your life),
     c) enjoying yourself, and
     d) trying, which is really learning, stretching yourself, growing in your abilities.

That is being alive.
As an old shoe company slogan once said, “Just Do It!”

P.S.  The photo is me, with my camera & guitar, wearing my favorite color, with a favorite watercolor painting (by Jeffrey Hull from Cannon Beach) of the beach (Hug Point, OR, a fav place) in the background.  So many of my favorites, in one place.  This makes me feel ALIVE.  :)

Doorway to a Solution

Deeper

It seems like every believer in Christ,
every single one of us who choose to follow Him
and surrender to God's plans for our life,
we ALL at some time or another
face experiences that try to pull us away from God.

Like a giant powerful magnet...
thoughts cross our mind like,
"Does God SEE what is going on?"
"Does He even CARE?"
"What is going ON?"
"I can't take this much longer!"

We are given opportunity after opportunity
to give up, to turn and walk away,
to abandon God,
'cause it sure looks like that's what He has done to us.

It feels like He has forgotten us.
But the REAL TRUTH is...
He has NOT forgotten!
In fact, He is in the middle of something VERY BIG in our life,
at that very moment!
He is trying to take us deeper.
He is trying to take us to a deeper place of trusting Him,
of utter dependence on Him.

Will we trust Him?
Do we believe He is in charge, and is up to something good?
Do we believe He has good things planned for us?
Do we really believe that He loves us?

All of the bad is really a test.
The test allows us to KNOW HIM MORE.
Trust Him more.
To cry out to Him, and receive from His mighty and generous hands.

Will you trust Him?
Will you let Him take you deeper?
I know it is not easy.
I know it is not fun.
But it is worth it.
I promise!

Embracing Problems

Read "Jesus Calling" today, by Sarah Young.
The topic was about
embracing life’s problems, as they transform us into masterpieces.
Hmmm… Embrace problems? Really?
My 1st thought is
"No way! Yuck! Get them as far away from me as possible!
Icky-yucky-kaka-poo-poo!"

But as I read more, it began to appear that problems are like chisels.
The chip, gouge, and scrape away at us.
Ouch! I don’t like that.
Sarah encouraged us to trust God, and don’t defy His process.

If we trust God, it’s like our choice,
puts the chisel into His mighty and capable hands.
Then He masterfully, with the skill of a surgeon or master gardener,
gentle, carefully, wisely knows what to chip, gouge, scrape
& cut away from us,
in a manner that removes only the bad, dead, poisonous,
damaged, unneeded parts of us.
And He can do it with minimal pain, discomfort or further loss.
No mindless hacking.

So, I’m trying to be willing to embrace the problems,
knowing I can trust the Master Garden & Healer.
Choosing puts the chisel in His hands.

I do so want to be transformed into the masterpiece He has in mind.

Just read an interesting book....

SWAY The Irresistable Pull of Irrational Behavior
by Ori Brafman and Rom Brafman

I thought it was very interesting. I took some good notes.
Co-written by brothers,
one a renowned organizational expert,
the other a psychologist,
teaching university courses in personality and personal growth.,
Anyway, will go on my "Books" list.
Thank you Jane Kirkpatrick for mentioning it, at your retreat! :)

Another Parenting Mirror

Think of your children, if you have them. You hold a significant gift for them.

What do you want for them?
If you’re like most parents, you want the best for them. You want them to be healthy, happy, lively, participating in life, enjoying it, partaking of it. You hope they will be involved with others in a meaningful way. You want them to have minds of their own, not just be little, compliant robots, doing what you want (well, maybe occasionally that would be nice!).

You hope they will make good choices, that benefit them, as well as others around them in the world. Over all, you want life to go well for them. You wish no hardship on them. In fact, you want to protect them from harm’s way.

What do you want from them?
In return for loving them, raising them, pouring yourself out for them, providing for them, you hope they will love you back. You hope they will treat you and others with respect and honor. You hope that they will be honest, authentic, real. Deep down, you hope they will listen to you, trusting that what you say and do is for their best interest. You want them to follow your directions, so all goes well for them, and so that you can live in as much peace as possible while you’re together.

If I am vastly off track, and out of touch about this, PLEASE let me know. I am merely basing this off of what I’ve experienced and seen so far, in my 40+ years of life.

But if I am right…if any of this resonates with you, then I want to point out how the desires of your own heart reflect and mirror the heart of another dad. That dad is the father and creator of all life.
All the goodness in your heart, all the best wishes you have for your kids, all the dreams you have for them, all the ways you provide for them, and try to protect the, all of it comes straight from God’s heart.

Those things in your heart? They are HIS very wishes for you as well. He wants the best for you! He want you to have a mind of your own, but He hopes you will trust Him, and listen to Him, respect Him, and obey Him when He gives you direction. All that it may go well with you. He too has a gift for you.

He truly wants the best for you.~
